Shatter Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi
This review will contain minor spoilers!!
Description: Shatter Me is a YA dystopian fiction that tells the story of a teenage girl who has never been able to experience human touch. Labelled a freak, she finds herself locked up in an asylum where she is left incomplete isolation until The Reestablishment decide that they want to use her as a weapon.
Plot: I honestly thought it was an amazing plot for this being the first book in the series. Meaning usually the first book of the series is not a five star read. Now to get to the actual review, the book starts off with the main character, Juliette, describing her life in the asylum. Soon after the book starts a new character, Adam, gets put into the same room/cell as Juliette. Juliette teaches Adam what to do and not do in the asylum. What Juliette doesn't tell Adam is that she knows him. A little bit after Adam arrives Juliette gets taken out of the asylum. Juliette finds out Adam has been working for the Reestablishment. Juliette, not knowing what is going to happen to her or who to trust, gets told that the Reestablishment whats to use her as a weapon. They want to user because of her ability, she cannot touch anyone and they cannot touch her because if she were to touch anyone they would either die or they would have major injuries. Juliette refuses to help them. Warner, the leader of their sector, puts her in the main head quarters and has her being watched at all times. Throughout the book Warner will test her in cruel ways and try to charm so she would help him. During all of Warners tests, Juliette is trying to find a way to escape. Overall I thought the plot was amazing.
Characters: I liked most of the characters. They were all very well written. First, Let's start with the main character, Juliette. Juliette was born with an unnatural ability to kill or severely injure people. After an accident involving her and another human being, when she was fourteen, Juliette was put in hospitals and science labs to be tested on for two years. Until they finally put her in an insane asylum. Juliette is not sure of herself and has no self confidence. Next, we are going to talk about Adam. Adam is a soldier for the Reestablishment, sent undercover to spy on Juliette in the asylum. After she is taken out Adam is assigned to watch her and only leave her side when he is told. Throughout the book Adam will grow closer to Juliette and even start caring for her. The only other lead character in this book is Warner, there are other characters but they are not as big in this book. Warner is the leader of one of the Reestablishments sectors. He uses his power to make people afraid of him. Warner has been fascinated by Juliette ever since he started looking into her files. Warner is very cruel and charing in a way. He does some cruel things to Juliette and he does some charming things to her.
Romance: The romance in this books was little strange. It is between Juliette and Adam. They both barley know each other but still fall for each other almost instantly. I thought it was kind of cute but not my favorite. Warner does try to charm Juliette in many ways.
Age Rating: I would rate this book probably a 14+, depending on maturity, maybe 13. The only thing they do that is questionable is make out. They also cuss a little but they do not go past the s-word.
Overall Rating: I rated it 4/5 stars, but it has five star potential for some people. I really liked it and read it super fast. I cant wait for the next book.
